Stain
"Are we there yet?"
Stain rolled his silver eyes and did not slow his steady pace through the forest, annoyed at his younger brother's impatience. The pair of gray wolves had been on the move for close to a month now, in search of a well-organized pack that was accepting new members. The forest they were currently trekking through was void of any kind of civilization. Stain hadn't scented a wolf pack of more than three members in the whole time they'd been journeying, which was quite unusual. But onward they went, with the steadfast perseverance of a continent.
Equinox, Stain's younger sibling, was slightly smaller in stature, and his fur was much more colorful. His eyes were an inquisitive and playful pale blue, and his face was always full of mischief. Stain, on the other hand, was stockier and larger, with an almost pure black pelt. He carried the burdens and responsibility, being the much more realistic and wiser of the two, so his expression was typically more tranquil and intelligent. The premature graying of his muzzle fur only added to his serene disposition.
Stain felt a nudge to his shoulder and flicked an ear, irritated. "We're not going anywhere in particular, Nox. I don't know if we're there yet." He snapped, his patience wearing down after hours of his brother's incessant whining. Equinox darted ahead of him, then back again, prancing about anxiously like a deer.
"I'm so bored!" The younger wolf exclaimed. Stain stopped suddenly in his tracks, his composure gone.
"Enough!" He demanded, his voice deep and threatening. He faced his brother and dropped into a fight stance, his silver eyes narrowed and tail lashing. "I've had enough of your whining and whimpering and foolishness!" Equinox's eyes widened briefly in surprise, and he stopped moving, stood relaxed, and stared at his companion calmly.
"Have I irritated you?" He asked, taunting, his eyes mischievous. Stain snarled.
"Yes. Yes you have." He growled.
"I'm sorry..." Answered Equinox innocently.
"No, you're not. Fight me if you dare." Stain retorted.
"That isn't fair. You know you'll beat me." Equinox pouted.
"And you'll deserve it. Now come on!" On his last words, Stain launched myself towards his brother, another snarl ripping from his throat. Nox yelped and scrambled away, churning up leaves and moss as he went, but not before the larger male's teeth caught a puff of his tail fur. Stain skidded to a stop to hack loudly and cough the fur into a ball, which he spat out. Equinox sped away, using his swiftness against his brother in order to save himself. Stain kicked into gear, racing after the smaller and faster wolf, panting and snarling, his eyes crazed and furious.
Suddenly, Stain smelled something odd. He slowed, his expression clearing and body relaxing into a more inquisitive posture. He sniffed once, twice, and pinpointed the scent. Flicking his ears around, he realized that Equinox was still racing away, and Stain could faintly hear him yelling at the top of his lungs that he was done, he was sorry, he didn't want to fight. Stain sighed like the elder wolf he was and raised his muzzle, howling for his brother. Nox, some distance away, stopped, spun around, realized he was no longer being chased, and loped back with a smug look on his face.
"I knew you wouldn't hurt me." He gloated as he neared the spot where his brother stood.
"Don't be too sure," Stain warned, irked once again, but then turned his attention to the forest in front of them. Nox did the same, noticing immediately what they were looking at- or rather, smelling. He glanced at his brother, eyes full of wonder.
"We found a pack." He said, amazed.

Equinox (Nox)
"We found a pack."
Equinox stood next to his brother in awe, his olfactory glands picking up the scents of a relatively large pack. They had an Alphess, but no Alpha. They were accepting members. All these things the brothers could pick up merely from scenting the pack's borders.
"We should howl." Equinox said, knowing that the unknown pack would appreciate this courtesy. Stain nodded in agreement.
"Together?" He wondered out loud. Nox shrugged.
"It makes sense. Easier for them to tell there's two of us." "True. Okay, on the count of three. One.... Two... Three!" With the elder brother's count, they raised their muzzles to the sky and howled out their song, voices mixing melodically after years of practice. They asked politely for a pack member to meet us at the border where they stood to see if they could have the honor of joining pack ranks. Flattery was sometimes looked down upon by packs that thought it below them, but for the two wolves it was a helpful strategy. It caught a pack's attention, and after they got to know Stain and Equinox a little better, the brothers would have the chance to showcase other techniques, such as their physical attributes.
Nox was fast. Stain was powerful. Together they made quite the team, hunting, fighting, and traveling together as a well-exercised pair. Coming from where they had, their efficiency was hardly uncommon. Their home pack, Drachma, was and always will be an orderly one. Not strict, or cruel, because everywolf already knew the rules, but always using their advantages and resources as best they could. Stain and Equinox carried those traits with them even as they lived away from their birth pack. So they knew the drill. They made the drill, actually, and perfected it.
So that left them prepared and in a comfortable routine as they ended their song and waited patiently at the border of a new pack, ready to begin their cycle once again. Said cycle consisted of going from pack to pack, joining, getting to know the members, and gaining strength off their food until an unspoken requirement was fulfilled. They never stayed in one pack for long.
But that didn't mean they never would. Perhaps this pack would suit their needs, perhaps not.
Joining yet another legion of wolves meant that they would have to put on their group-wolf acts. Wandering around aimlessly with a sibling didn't exactly call for manners, so both brothers were slightly lacking in the submission department. Nox, especially, found it increasingly difficult to adjust back into the meek temperaments that all mid-rank pack wolves seemed to possess. He felt, with his playful and easygoing nature, that submission was unnecessary, and that Alphas who demanded it from their wolves were nothing but power-lording egotistical tyrants. That the idea of one wolf being superior to all others was absolutely ridiculous and unfair. Nevertheless, he did try to keep himself in check while in the presence of those who would keep him safe and fed.
"We might as well sit." Stain determined as he shook out his pelt and did so. His brother glanced at him, nodded silently, and did the same, keeping his ears perked for any sign of life, already getting into the submissive mindset, and hating himself for it.

I took a walk around the world...
Fell had originally planned to take a firm detour into one of the pack's territories, or perhaps he would have ventured into a neutral land where the possibility of meeting a pack member lessened. Whichever he desired, the plan had run short, for the distinctive howl of Allegro seemingly vibrated throughout the entire wood, as if had reflected off each plant and tree until it reached its sacred destination, the Beta's awaiting ears. Beta Fell lie there for a moment, taking a brief moment to collect himself, as he fought the inner demons to return to their barred trenches. Approaching loners and being with his Alpha, while in his current state would be an ignorant decision and so Fell did not stand until he was positive he would be able to handle the encounter. Once the majority had been shackled back, Fell's body felt mentally lighter, as their heavy weight upon him had been lifted. Immediately the beast rose from the forest floor, crossing the territory in a hastened fashion.
As he arrived, Fell decided a slow and cautious reveal to his presence was entirely unnecessary, for although Fell did not approach in a clamorous manner, as most would assume the beast would, he had not taken drastic measures to cover his entrance, and brazenly walked into the area where his Alpha and the accompanying males stood. "Evening." Entering with unmatched dominance, the only exclusion being the Alpha herself, the enormous beast immediately allowed his rank to also wash upon them. Usually dominance was not an overly concern of Fell's, as long as it was obviously given, but the loners being males, and he a male himself, Fell knew well of what trouble they could bring; especially the possible egos and scornful attitudes. The brief, possible harsh though undeniable, display of dominance negatively effected him however, as it seemed to mentally unshackle few the mental demons which had released themselves earlier. Ignoring their inner gnawing, Fell made a swift head turn towards the fair she-wolf whom he called Alpha, "I hope all goes well here but Alpha Allegro, there is a matter of higher importance that I wish you, personally, to attend to. There should be two females awaiting your presence. They go by the name of Kira and Isabella." While the former sentence was said loud enough for either loner to here, the latter two had been slightly more hushed, the male not wanting the others to know new members awaited, new members that needed a final ranking approval. However, as Beta Fell spoke to Allegro, that uncommon yet fearful feeling continued, an inner voice seeming to whisper, 'Did it not feel wondrous to practically give her an order...to suggest she leave so you can have these two by yourself? Prove your dominance to them...make them quiver with fear as their stomachs dig into the soil, lower, lower, break their bones if they refuse. Do it, Fell...do it...' A visible, though un-describable, quiver vibrated throughout the brute as he argued, denying their efforts and refusing the tempting thoughts that had plagued him since puphood. "Go ahead, they are surely waiting for you. I can handle these two here." Despite the voices, Fell did not bend, although his pelt felt aggravatingly warm, and his main concern now was his Alpha's safety. Dealing with two males by ensure her self-confidence but inside he felt everything would be less cautious should she not be around. However, should she decline, Fell would never argue her decision. In an attempt to distract himself and get to the matter at hand, the brute's amber orbs finally rested once more upon the duo. "Speak your alliances, should you have any. Give your names or they will be provided. Do not waste time, answer quickly and efficiently, there are more things to attend to and although you are important, should your confidence in being here waver, I will run you off until you are more sure in your choices."
To ease my troubled mind...

Stain
Stain ended his song with a melodic, lingering note and lowered his great black head to scan the forest in front of him, ears forward and awaiting any sound. His brother next to him followed suit, turning slightly more to the right while the dark-pelted elder brother searched the left. After no more than a few minutes, an answering female howl could be heard. It was cold and dominant, clearly warning the brothers that if they lied about their intentions they would be punished accordingly, as well as calling another unknown wolf. Stain exchanged a glance with his mottled brother and lowered his tail, knowing that this she-wolf meant business and was probably of a higher rank.
The large black male flicked an ear quickly, and looked over at Equinox again. The younger wolf would be speaking for the two for a number of reasons, the first of which being that he was more social overall, and could charm or convince others quite easily. Besides this, they found that pack wolves felt less intimidated by Stain's size when they saw that he was not the one to speak for the two of them, and that he was able to back down and show respect for smaller wolves. In all their travels, they had met only three wolves whose sizes exceeded Stain's, which, to any other male, would be flattering. Stain, however, saw his bulk as a bit of a curse, in that he was rarely, if ever, approached by another wolf without the stranger showing some form of wariness or fear. Equinox was the exception, something he was grateful for in his younger brother. It meant that other wolves warmed up to his size much easier than they would without Nox. But even with those perks, Stain was sometimes immensely jealous of his brother's ability to blend in and make friends so quickly. He supposed it probably couldn't be helped anyway, but he still occasionally found himself glaring accusingly at Nox without even noticing it.
"Stain?" Equinox questioned softly, tilting his head.
The larger male jumped, realizing that now was one of those times. His brother was looking at him, concerned, and maybe a bit offended. He softened his gaze and looked away from his Nox, embarrassed.
"It's nothing," he mumbled.
Suddenly, Stain noticed a brief flash of movement in the woods before them. He tensed and jumped to his paws, wondering if this could be the same female who had called out earlier. He lowered his tail a bit more just in case, but kept the rest of his body upright and cautious.
The she-wolf that stepped forward was truly a sight to behold. Her pelt was a smooth blend of cream and coal black, and she was small for her obvious Alpha rank, but somehow still held power in her pose. She slipped out of the forest like a flower from its bud and approached the two of them, snarling. After taking a split second to marvel at the authority she held with such a small body, Stain nudged his brother and promptly lowered his body down as far as he could, tucking in his tail and ears and dropping his silver gaze. He shifted his paws slightly so he could support his weight better, and willed himself to stay still and quiet. He silently entrusted his younger brother with the task of conversing with this magnificent she-wolf.

Equinox (Nox)
Nox did the same as his older sibling, with perhaps a bit more resistance in his bow. He risked a glance up at the Alphess's paws. They were small, like the rest of her, and they came to a pause just before the brothers. The slushy, melting snow covered her paws and some of her lower legs, which Nox noted with an inward laugh. If trouble arose, the brothers could easily take her. He observed this not with the intent of starting a fight, but merely as a way of gathering information. Their hope was to join this pack, which would be nearly impossible if Nox couldn't show the right amount of submission. He winced slightly at the idea, forcing himself lower.
"Why have you come here, wolves? Are you a part of Bantu's forces? State your reason for approaching my border. Extremely close to my border, might I add." said the Alphess briskly. At the mention of their distance from the border, Nox exchanged a look with Stain, wondering if they should back up. The elder male shook his head very slightly, indicating that it just wasn't worth the trouble. Nox nodded and raised his eyes slightly to address the still unnamed Alphess.
"Greetings, Alphess. My name is Equinox, and this is my brother Stain. We apologize greatly for our proximity to your land, but we stumbled upon it quite by accident. We have come a long way in search of a pack to join, and we wish to become a part of yours." He finished, and smiled up at her charmingly, satisfied with his introduction, and then remembered something else the Alphess had mentioned.
"As I said, we come from very far away and have not heard of this Bantu. I hope that our ignorance does not decrease our chances of joining your pack." The foreign name felt strange on his tongue, and it came out awkwardly.
Suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, another wolf appeared. This one was male, larger and more powerful than Nox, but still a good deal smaller than Stain, a detail which Nox filed away smugly. His pelt was almost the same color as Stain's, except with a bit of a rusty orange tint and a patch of white on his chest. His eyes were nearly red, and he held himself in such a way that Nox could only peg him as a Beta wolf. He neared their location and spoke to the Alphess quietly, and as he did so, the wind shifted. His scent confirmed Nox's assumption of his rank. He found it odd that the two most powerful wolves in the pack had both appeared to investigate the brothers, but he supposed each pack had its own priorities. Clearly, defending camp wasn't very high on this pack's list, which he could only guess meant that the pack members were strong on their own. This was good news.
The Beta turned his head to the two outsiders and spoke.
"Speak your alliances, should you have any. Give your names or they will be provided. Do not waste time, answer quickly and efficiently, there are more things to attend to and although you are important, should your confidence in being here waver, I will run you off until you are more sure in your choices." Nox hesitated, not sure whether or not to speak. After all, he had just explained himself to the Alphess. Surely she would want to brief her Beta on the newcomers. He decided to stay silent for the moment, waiting to see if the black and cream female would explain for them. If not, he would have to speak up quickly.

Allegro named each of the wolves while pointing to them with her creamy muzzle. "That is Equinox, and the other is Stain. Judging by their similar scents, they are siblings. Although they say they don't belong with Bantu, Equinox has quite the silver tongue on him. I have my doubts." Most would have expected the last bit of information to be delivered softly so that only her Beta could hear. But the brash Alphess said it aloud. If Bantu was waiting along her border, watching the ordeal, he'd know he had been suspected. And if he wasn't, well, there was no harm in being overly cautious. With these words spoken, Allegro dipped her head to the siblings. "I wish you both luck in gaining my Beta's approval. I hope to see you both in the camp shortly." With one last, warning glance to her troubled Beta, she turned on her heels and dashed out of sight of the males at her border. [/font][/ul][/ul][/ul]

Equinox (Nox)
Nox observed the high-ranked wolves' actions carefully, ears flicking forward to catch the Alphess's quiet mention of her Beta's name. Fell. Although the small female had not introduced herself, Nox still felt a bit more comforted knowing at least one name.
Beta Fell seemed troubled, he noticed. For all his macho bad-boy talk, Nox was very observant and cared quite a lot about the emotions of his packmates, even those he didn't know at all. He knew how a wolf's mood could affect their performance. He saw it all too often in his introverted brother. The Beta was troubled, and Equinox could see the pain in his eyes and the way he held himself, like he had fought many great battles and seen much for his years. Nox instantly respected him as a wolf who would always know more hardship than he and his brother could ever imagine. Some would think the freelance wolf's immediate judgement and analysis of another's personality to be hasty and ineffective, but Nox was sure enough in his ability. He wasn't one to care what others thought of his methods anyway.
The Alphess spoke to her Beta once again. "That is Equinox, and the other is Stain. Judging by their similar scents, they are siblings. Although they say they don't belong with Bantu, Equinox has quite the silver tongue on him. I have my doubts." She said this quite loudly, obviously to provoke him. It worked. Equinox raised his head a bit, shocked and indignant. Clearly this Bantu was somebody the pack disliked, and to be suspected of associating with an enemy just because of the way he spoke highly offended Nox. His lips curled in a half-snarl, but he made no sound as Stain placed a huge black paw in front of him, shaking his head in warning. The smaller brother hesitated, the snarl still on his lips, before slowly lowering his head and ears once again, albeit somewhat spitefully. His eyes stayed narrowed, and he continued watching carefully.
Typically, Equinox had no problem being friendly. He made allies easily, and he did his best with submission, but what respect he failed to show was hardly his fault; it was simply in his nature. However, when somebody insulted him for no reason, demanded he do something he'd rather not, or punished him or another pack member unfairly, he lost it. Nox could only truly respect a wolf when they respected him. Trust was a form of respect, and he expected others to trust his word.
With a quick word of good luck, the Alphess suddenly turned tail and raced away into the trees, presumably to take care of other business. That left the three males alone. Nox eyed Fell curiously, and did his best to appear unthreatening. Stain, too, raised his eyes to observe the Beta, wondering what else lay in store for the brothers. Nox assumed that the dark male in front of them would be protective of his pack and cautious of two loner males, as he should be. But he also hoped that his word would be trusted about not knowing Bantu. He made a mental note to inquire about public enemy number one, should the brothers be accepted into the pack. Obviously his involvement was an important factor to these wolves, something that intrigued the younger of the two males. Nox filed away this mental note and returned his attention to the Beta.

I left my body lying somewhere...
Awaiting for his Alphess to finish, amber orbs fell upon the duo in silence, observing them as each ones name was unveiled. The large male felt like laughing when she expressed her doubts so openly, the confidence undeniably laced in each word, not afraid that the brothers could hear her. Keeping his amusement to himself, his own voice dialed down to match her previous whisper, his words caressing her ear before she sashay from his grasp, "I won't do anything to them," awaiting until the female's figure had gone, the ending finally slithered out from the hidden forked tongue, "yet." Eyes narrow slits upon their coats, Fell's forelegs brought him closer to them, his unwavering as he spoke, "Despite some wishing for there to be, so I may rip you to shreds, skin you and display your coats as victorious flags, fear not, brothers, for I believe you do not have any ties with Bantu. Irrelevant, yet I know Bantu would not have two wolves such as yourselves under his command in the first place." Currently an entire wolf length between them, the Beta's expression held firm as he spoke, not ashamed of the underlying threat he proposed should they come across as Bantu's followers. Although, even as his loyalties to the pack held firm, Fell knew there was something else within him that wished for them to be of the enemy, as if that part just wanted an excuse, per se, to do as they wished. Allowing his latter comment to be taken any way, the bold male allowed himself to sit, brazenly relieving himself of the itch which occupied itself behind his right ear with his rear paw.
Straightening, the Beta stood, a gleaming and treacherous beast, mentally fighting those whom wished to smite them, time passing, his ears prepared to rotate appropriately should one of them speak. Perhaps ignoring or not yet acknowledging any comment they may have madethe ebony muzzled parted, a comforting thought becoming his troubled mind, "Though we all come from larger litters, whether they all live or not is another story, and are bound to have siblings...I too had a brother; brothers actually. Perhaps even have, I do not know. If I may, though you may decline to answer, what is it like to travel with your kin? To leave home and, instead of leaving them, having them accompany you?" Why did he also wish to ask how they thought on abandoning? How they would react to a possible story of someone simply leaving their sibling behind without another thought, their kin a charred corpse for all they knew? Did such actions deserve forgiveness or should they be given a fate worse? Exhaling gently, his eyelids hid his eyes as he wondered, the male only appearing to them as if he were taking a moment to moisten his eyes. Curiosity is one of the worst demons imaginable.
In the sands of time...
